After being designated for assignment last week, left-handed pitcher Victor Gonzalez has returned to the New York Yankees organization. He cleared waivers on Wednesday and was subsequently optioned to triple-A Scranton.
Gonzalez was removed from the bullpen due to his lackluster performance this season, prompting the Yankees to call up right-handers Yoendrys Gomez and Phil Bickford to strengthen an injury-depleted bullpen. Despite his 3.86 ERA, Gonzalez struggled with strikeouts, recording only 11 in 23.1 innings for the Yankees this season.

Entering the season, the Yankees anticipated Gonzalez would be effective in high-leverage situations, following a few successful seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Unfortunately, his issues with command (5.01 BB/9) and difficulty in striking out batters proved problematic. Yankees manager Aaron Boone mentioned these struggles as reasons for his removal.
“It was challenging to find a good role for him,” Boone said regarding Gonzalez (via NJ.com). “He had difficulties with strike throwing and not finishing off batters. We felt this was an issue we needed to address in the long term.”
The Yankees bullpen has been severely impacted by injuries this season. Johnathan Loaisiga underwent UCL surgery in early April, ending his season, while Nick Burdi has struggled with back issues, resulting in multiple IL stints. Lou Trivino, who missed all of 2023, has yet to return from Tommy John surgery after a setback with elbow inflammation delayed his recovery.
After a strong start to the season, the bullpen is showing signs of wear. As of Wednesday, Yankees relievers have a 4.54 ERA in June, a notable increase from their 2.91 ERA in the prior months.
Scott Effross is on the comeback trail
Fortunately, the Yankees are expecting reinforcements. Right-hander Scott Effross, who missed all of 2023 due to Tommy John surgery and later a back injury, has moved his rehab assignment to triple-A Scranton, the final step before a potential return to Major League games. Acquired from the Chicago Cubs at the 2022 trade deadline, Effross impressed with a 2.13 ERA, three saves, and three holds in 13 games for New York.
